Mr. William Story, Radio Television Instructor at Delta College, took the stage and thanked everyone for their support. Each time Mr. Story took the stage, or even approached the stage, the audience cheered with enthusiasm.

To kick things off, Beloved Sister took the stage and sang a great a cappella piece. After they exited the stage, the crowd cheered for an encore. After a couple of minutes, the four young girls aged 11 to 15 came back for another original song.

The co-producers, Fia Delgado, Carla Jay, Kitty Kennedy, MJ Garcia, Rick Cortez,and  Melissa Deverell, took the stage and talked about what this film meant to them.

Before jumping into Sunshine, we were treated to Illusia, a short film written by Curtis Wilson and produced by MJ Garcia.

Rather than simply watching clips, the audience, since most were cast, crews, volunteers or supporters, were asked what scenes they wanted to see. Then Melissa Deverell found the scene in Final Cut Pro and played it. In each segment, actors from that particular scene were invited on stage to give their commentary. Think of it as a live director’s cut. Very nice touch.

At the end, all of the cast and crew were asked to come on stage and dance, while Mr. Story filmed. This scene, along with dancing audience members, was to be the final scene of the movie said Mr. Story. To receive a named credit in the movie, participants need only visit the RTV department and sign the form. What a very cool way to end the show.

Beep baseball is baseball, slightly modified to be played by blind and visually impaired athletes. Players wear blindfolds to level the playing field for those with varying levels of visual impairment. The NBBA World Series is August 1 through August 8.

Jennifer said they are happy to be playing alongside the Storm because they have been great supporters of the Stingrays. When the Stingrays were short volunteers at the 2005 World Series in Houston, one of the Storm volunteers made the drive from Colorado to south Texas to help them out.

Next year, the NBBA World Series will be played in Indianapolis, Indiana and the Stingrays are hoping to send the full team to compete. In 2009, Stockton hosted the NBBA World Series [podcast|pictures].

To send a full team of players and volunteers, they need to raise $20,000, about $1,000 per person. This season’s sweetheart pancake breakfast, pasta dinner, golf tournament (the golf tournament raised a record amount this year) and other events were successful but didn’t raise the full $20,000. With Lyons closed and Oakmoore on the selling block, Jennifer and others are already working to find a location for next year’s golf tournament.

If you’d like to watch the Stingrays play exhibition games against teams from the community, they play Saturdays at 10 a.m. at Atherton Park through August 28. Come out and watch.

A Bay Area casting agency is looking for Stockton talent. On May 22nd, American Eagle Casting will be holding an open audition for roles in the second season of the Investigation Discovery Channel’s series, “I Almost Got Away With It.” The casting calls will be held in Patterson beginning at 10AM and American Eagle Studios has asked specifically for participation from anyone interested from Stockton.

Our thoughts on Mayor Ann Johnston’s State of the City Address. Last week the Mayor gave her Stockton State of the City Address speech. She talked about what Stockton needs to do in order to shake it’s national reputation. Dallas Braden was also brought up as an example of the kind of person she is looking to to help change the “attitude” of the city. You can read the text of the speech here.

The Stockton Stingrays vs. Podcast Stockton beep baseball rematch you have all been waiting for. We recently took on the Stockton Stingrays beep baseball team. The Stockton Stingrays are still looking for six-person teams to play them on Saturdays at Atherton Park. A recap of the 22nd Annual Earth Day Festival. Matt and I were emcees at Stockton’s Earth day festival hosted by the Peace and Justice Network of San Joaquin Valley. There were several bands and performing artists that participated in the event including The Afternaps and Tara Tinsley from Musicians for a Better Planet. Several teachers were given awards as well as a grant and Congressman Jerry McNerney and City Council Member Susan Eggman addressed the attendees. The Courage Campaign of San Joaquin is hosting a Mardi Gras party. On Friday April 30th at 6:00pm, the Courage Campaign of San Joaquin will be putting on a Mardi Gras party in an effort to raise awareness of their organization. The event will be held at Valley Ministries MMC in Stockton and is free to attend.

Help save “Music in the Park.”A 58 year old tradition is on the verge of ending as the City will no longer be able to support the “Music in the Park” program held at Victory Park. Thusday, April 29th from 5:30 to 7:30, there will be a fundraiser to help continue this event. Bring your chair and your checkbook and enjoy the music of local artists “Next Door Neighbor;”

Andy, aka @Brewery33, makes good on his Trash Bet. You can catch two videos made from Trash Bet – Rod’s and Manuel’s. If this is your first time hearing about Trash Bet, it was a bet Andy and Matt made in the beginning of the 2010 NFL playoff season. Andy, in honor of Gary Vaynerchuk’s favorite team, predicted that the NY Jets would advance to, and win, the Super Bowl. Matt, on the other hand, picked the Saints to go all the way. The price of the wager was 1 hour of picking up trash somewhere in Stockton. He also put some of his findings up on Closet Goodies. Way to go Andy!

Just as promised, the fine folks at UPS delivered my iPad yesterday. I had been a little worried the last few days since the UPS site still showed my iPad in China as late as yesterday.

After a couple of Google searches (and a few Topeka searches) over the last few days I realized there were many other iPads “stuck in China”. A quick search on Twitter led me to @ThomasAtUPS who must’ve been the hardest working person on Twitter! He responded to tons of questions from soon-to-be iPad owners. @ThomasAtUPS assured me my iPad would be delivered today. Well, actually, he Tweeted it to everyone.

I had the iPad shipped to my mailing address, which just happens to be a friendly local UPS store. On an unrelated note, we have done business with Jason and his crew for 15 years, back when it was Mail Boxes Etc. – we love these guys, they really understand customer service! Ok, now back to the iPad story.

My brother, Mike, joined me to pick up the package. First, however, we went to Best Buy and met Arvin who gave us a great demo of the device. We also ran into friend of the show, Tom Moccia from BuyMeAniPhone.com who was there picking up a couple of iPads.

A couple of hours later the iPad was in hand.

First let me say; physically, the iPad truly is like nothing else I’ve ever held. It was heavier than I imagined it would be, which I was happy about. No one wants light and wimpy tech toys! Now, I know I’m a fan boy, but seriously, it just feels right (extra cheese points if you read that in Johnny Ive’s voice… even more extra cheese points if you know who Johnny Ive is).

The first thing I did was open Photos. Nice UI! Then I went to Safari. I wanted to know what it felt like to touch the internet. It felt amazing. This unique way of browser interaction transcends the iPhone experience. It just makes sense.

I could go on and one. If you’re still here, though, it might be easier to just watch the video.

After only using it for a few minutes, I can say that it is awesome!

Originally, I said I would have preferred something more like desktop Mac OS X, with Finder, but, I wanted this just for casual surfing and e-mail… a tasks that it performs incredibly well! So far, the only thing I don’t love is the presentation of Mail while in portrait mode. I would prefer to not have an individual message shown when I open the application.

Crappy first-generation? No way! While I’m sure the next version of the iPad will be amazing, I am glad I bought the first. The web surfing is awesome. The iPad apps (like ABC, Twitteriffic, Words with Friends HD) are all great. Games from the iPhone (Tetris, Traffic Rush, Demonless) are a lot more fun on the large screen! And the speed. This thing screams from app to app. I don’t care about it’s lack of true multi-tasking, apps nearly all open where you last left them.

Matt Beckwith and Rod Villagomez announced this morning that they have transferred ownership of Podcast Stockton to local podcasters Gabriel and Devin from The Single Malt Versus podcast. This change is ownership is effective immediately.

In the last year, Matt and Rod have worked hard to improve the image of Stockton. Their efforts proved successful when Forbes recently named Stockton the second most miserable city in the US, giving the top honors to Cleveland, Ohio. Matt & Rod have decided to move to Cleveland to help them in their quest to prove to the world that they are not a miserable city.

“We had a good run at Podcast Stockton and are happy to turn the keys over to Gabe and Devin” said Matt Beckwith, co-host and founder of Podcast Stockton.

“We have had a good run, and we would be remiss if I did not mention that nearly all of our success is because of me. It is time to take my talents, I mean our talents to the great people of Cleveland” added co-host Rod Villagomez.

In addition to all rights to podcast under the name Podcast Stockton, Gabe and Devin also acquired the Outback Studios and all of the recording equipment used to produce the show. No other financial terms were made available.

Gabriel and Devin, along with Kraig and other guests, have produced the Single Malt Versus podcasts for more than the past year.

Alicia performed first and played three songs on her own before her Mom joined her on backing vocals; they sounded awesome together! Her last song was one she wrote about her friends David and Michelle who were in the audience, “Relationship Status”. Alicia has a rich sound and seemed very comfortable taking the stage, even if it was her first time.

Adam, Alicia’s husband, performed next. First with acoustic bass and then on the piano. Playing solo with just an acoustic bass is not easy to pull off but Adam did so masterfully. His first song was “Zum” (not sure I’m spelling it right) followed by “Mr. Not So Fantastic” and a song he wrote for his wife. His next song was about his former life as a hard core gansta – “Went down to Oak Park and pulled out my gat / I started a gang war and in the cross fire was a cat”. As talented and inventive Adam is on the bass, he is even more so on the piano where he played a couple more songs.

Danny, who just happens to be friends with co-host Rod Villagomez, was next in the line-up. He described his first song as being inspired because “nature lives longer than humans and the sun has been burning for millions of years and must be bored with life.” Danny is a skilled guitarist and showed off his technical prowess with great open chords all the way down the fretboard.

The last performer was Daniel, who is Rod’s cousin, proving that the universe really is centered around Rod. Daniel was a stand-in for another performer who, at the last minute, couldn’t make it. He is an accomplished musician who performs with the local band, Filbert. He took the stage with his nylon string guitar, which was a great accompaniment to his voice. Daniel warmed up with “Honda Civic” and “Tall Tall Walls” and then progressed into a couple of more songs that showed off his awesome vocals and guitar work. His last tune, “Time Travel Were Possible” was a great up-tempo song to end the evening. Filbert is playing this Friday in Modesto.

Thanks so much to Adam and Alicia for your hospitality. I really enjoyed listening to all of the performers. Your home is perfect for an acoustic show!

This years event, the first to sell-out, was held inside the A.G. Spanos Center at University of the Pacific after many years at the Stockton Memorial Civic Auditorium.

We arrived shortly after noon to claim our tables on the stage and in the audience. The prime spots went first to the teams that were able to set up early. We set up shop on the back row, which was perfect since I was afraid my hat would block someone from being seen by the audience.

After eating a great dinner catered by Angelina’s, we went to the top deck for pictures. While we were waiting in line, we met the threesome with the Stockton Rotary team. After a few minutes, we figured out why one them looked familiar: he was one of the men that stands behind the goal at the Stockton Arena and hits the buzzer when there’s a score.

The teams took the stage shortly after 7 PM and were introduced one by one. Then, the hard work began. The first question asked what suspense film maker inspired a Lady Gaga song. I don’t know much about Lady Gaga but guessed at the right answer: Alfred Hitchcock. Needless to say, we went crazy celebrating the fact we were 1 for 1. Our fans out in the audience (Linda, Dawn and Flower) also cheered us on. The next 29 questions were not as easy. Most of the time, only one of us knew the answer to each question. At the end of round one, we had amassed 17 points. More than half, and one more than the couple of teams in last place!

The second round proved to be much more difficult with more questions about movies and literature. We only answered 9 of 30 correct for a total score of 35. The Friends of the Library team won the competition with a total of 65 points. Our only goal for the night was to not end up in last place. Thankfully we did better than last place.

We got a chance to talk to other Bee goers such as city council members Susan Eggman and Dale Fritchen, Vice Mayor Kathy Miller, Public Information Officer Connie Cochran, Foundation Executive Director Susan Spracher, SBDC Director Gillian Murphy, Record Editors Mike Klocke and Don Blount, Sheriff Steve Moore, Dwight Richards and many more.

The spirit award of the night, however, has to go to the local high school teams. There were teams from a few local area high schools but the teams represented by St. Mary’s, Lincoln and Stagg were energetic and excited to be competing. We sat next to the St. Mary’s team and had a great time getting to know them. One of the students had learned, as we were in the middle of competition, that he was accepted to UCLA. Fred snuck a note the master of ceremonies and an announcement was made, to thunderous applause. Later, when we asked him if was going to go there, he said, “No, I want to go to Stanford.”

Kudos to the Library & Literacy Foundation staff for putting on another fantastic Trivia Bee. Congratulations to the Friends of the Library team for taking home the Bobblehead Bee trophy.

We were thrilled to, once again, have the opportunity to share Podcast Stockton with more people.

Lowell is a product of the bay area and has, as of September of 2009, began to call Stockton his home. He comes to us by way of the Delta College Radio and Television department where he has hosted a sports talk program since his arrival in the spring semester of 2008.

During his tenure as the end-all-be-all of the Delta sports talk scene Lowell has made regular guest of such prominent bay area sports writers as the beat writers for the San Francisco Giants, the Oakland A’s, and the Golden State Warriors. He has also played host to Damon Bruce of KNBR fame and even had the opportunity to interview Gary Radnich on his own show. And last but certainly not least he has chatted poker as well as life with ESPN’s World Series of Poker analyst Norman Chad.

Lowell Tuckerman is for real folks. You can still find him roaming the airwaves of Delta College’s Internet radio station iDPower on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 2pm until 4pm.

Over the course of his stay at Delta, Lowell has earned two certificates in both radio and television while adding an Associates Degree in Communications with a concentration in Radio. He remains at Delta to finish his general education classes on his way to transferring to a four-year University.

According to Lowell he is enjoying his time as a member of the Podcast Stockton crew and is thrilled to be a part of what he calls a “legit operation.” He has appreciated the opportunity to work with myself and Matt stating that being on this show has made him “proud of Stockton and proud to be part of the Podcast Stockton team.”

Lowell is looking to take his Podcast Stockton experience as well as his time at Delta to move up the ladder of the sports talk world. “I would like to someday be a sports talk show host in a big market like LA, New Orleans or Miami, and while I may be doing radio now, don’t get me wrong, I would love to do some television as well.”

But have you ever wondered where those hockey players come from? More importantly… did you even realize that hockey has been in Stockton longer then a lot of us actually realize. If not, allow me to introduce you to the Stockton Jr. Colts Hockey Club.

For over 50 years kids ranging in age from 5 to 18 have been lacing up their skates at the Oak Park Ice Arena, donning their Colts sweaters and competing against developmental teams from across the state and sometimes the country. Their teams may have whimsical categories like Mites, Squirrts, Pee Wees, Bantams, or Midgets, but don’t let that fool you, the caliber of hockey at which these young athletes compete is fast-paced and beyond impressive.

The Colts are members of the Northern California Junior Hockey Association (NORCAL), California Amateur Hockey Association, and USA Hockey and play against teams such as the Santa Rosa Flyers, the California Cougars (not to be confused with the soccer team), the Tri Valley Blue Devils, and the San Jose Jr. Sharks.

They operate as a non-profit organization that relies on sponsorships to offset a majority of their costs including ice rental time at their home rink, Oak Park Ice Arena, the cost of traveling to their away games as well as equipment upkeep and replacement.

Regular season play for the Colts usually begins in early September and runs through late March with games usually taking place on Saturdays and Sundays.

If you have not already had the opportunity to watch these talented hockey players, I highly encourage you to head out to the Oak Park Ice Arena this Sunday where beginning at 4:30pm you can watch the Bantams and the Midget 18 teams take on the San Francisco Sabercats. Find out for yourself why the Stockton Arena is not the only place hot action is taking place in below freezing temperatures.

Stockton is no longer at the top of the list. We were displaced by Cleveland, Ohio. Besides being the TV home for the Drew Carey show, and home to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the NBA Cavaliers and NFL Browns, Cleveland can now lay claim to being atop a list it would likely rather not be.

I do not dispute the methodology used by Forbes for this annual study. I think it is important to examine taxes, crime rates and commute times. What I do not understand, though, is the adjective (or better put, label) miserable.

If miserable is to be in a state of misery and misery is great unhappiness, I think it is impossible for an entire city (or, in actuality, all of its residents) to be miserable. That is too wide a net to cast over a quarter-million people.

I do not discount our crime rate, unemployment or taxes. Those are all very serious matters that need our attention. Those characteristics, however, do not define who we are as a city. Stockton is full of loving and caring people that care deeply for their neighbors. Podcast Stockton was born from last year’s Most Miserable list. Over the last year I have become more convinced that Stockton is full of positive people, people that wake up everyday wanting to do good. We are hard-working, chip-on-our-shoulder, charitable, family focused people that don’t beat ourselves up for being on a national magazine’s naughty list. Each week on Podcast Stockton, we strive to bring you the positive stories of our town and hope that you enjoy listening to them as much as enjoy doing them. Throughout 28 episodes, we realize more than ever that Stockton is not miserable.
